Cady gave Rikard a gentle nudge when they reached the outskirts of Salem, not entirely sure where they were headed after that. “Hey, are you awake?” she asked, nudging him harder when he didn’t budge.

“I am now,” he growled, sitting up to rub his neck from the awkward position he’d been in. “What’s our sit rep?”

“Ah… we’re reaching Salem now. You want to give me the coordinates so I can proceed to the target, sir?” she replied, giving him a mock salute, and his lips twisted into a wry grin.

“Do you think you’re being funny?”

“A bit, yeah,” she replied, doing a passable impression of his British accent.

“Now you’re being funny,” he snorted. “Maybe stick with murdering the English language in your own way, yeah?”

“Boy, somebody woke up on the wrong side of the car. Just tell me where we’re going and you can go back to sleep. I liked you better when you were snoring.”

“We’re going to the Mill Creek Correctional Facility, so take the exit after this one.”

“Aye, aye, Cap’n,” she saluted again.

“And I don’t snore.”

Apart from a case of the grumpies, Rikard didn’t appear to be the least bit drunk as they pulled into the parking lot for the correctional facility, which was a sprawling complex on a working farm from what he’d told her. It used to be a reform school for wayward boys, and Cady could believe it from the dour buildings and remote location.

Rikard got out, swapping out his leather jacket for a blazer from the back of the jeep. There wasn’t much Cady could do to make herself look more legit, not after he’d asked her to dress sexy for the strip club. The best she could do was pull her hair up into a simple twist.

“Are you sure they’re going to let us in here?” Cady was dubious, given the time and their utter lack of credentials.

“Relax, I’ve got this.”

“But it’s way after visiting hours.”

“Being a Company man is good for some things, you know.” He produced a marshal’s star and clipped it to his belt. Apparently she was the only one lacking credentials.

Her voice dropped to a whisper. “You’re going to impersonate a federal marshal?”

“Why not? I did when I dropped her off.”

“Oh.” Once again, she was impressed. Rikard was operating on a whole other level than the Company world she’d seen with Ethan. While Ethan tended to stay below the law’s radar, Rikard worked above it. “When can I get a nifty badge like that?”

“You shouldn’t need one.”

“And you do?”

He merely winked, taking the lead as they walked up to the main gate, all traces of his native accent masked by a bland American one. Cady kept quiet as they went through the series of checkpoints on the way inside, handing over her rusty dagger as though it was the most normal thing in the world as he turned in his pistol for safekeeping while they were in the facility. The staff were friendly and helpful, maybe a little slow, but it wasn’t like they were in a big rush.
